For more than a century now, we have seen the use of the Daylight Saving Time, popularly known as DST. Let us see some of the arguments there have been leveled as for and against this tradition. First and foremost, we need to be appreciating the fact that by changing the clocks, this doesn’t in any way create extra daylight but all it does is to cause the sun to set at a later time as on the settings of the clock. Essentially what we see in this is the fact that when we spring forward an hour as we do in the spring, all we achieve is an extra one hour natural daylight in the afternoon sessions. Proponents of DST have held on to the argument that this creation of the longer evenings benefits the health in the sense that it encourages many to get out of the house and as such take part in some of their choice recreational activities which to them is an effective counteraction to the effects of their sedentary lifestyles. Plus, it has as well been argued by them that these longer evenings given that they encourage people to get out and shop and enjoy much of their time out of the house, they help boost the economy as restaurants and the other establishments in the tourism sector get to benefit from the longer evenings.
However, one negative to this is in the fact that it doesn’t quite result in saving energy which is one of the main reasons and ideas behind the whole idea. By far and large, there are some of the states that have reported on the contrary an increase in their energy consumption following the introduction of the DST such as it has been in Indiana as there is such a high dependence on some of the energy consuming devices in the home such as air conditioning systems, TVs and appliances plus many more as such making this whole idea one that may not quite result in the intended purpose but one that needs to be brought to an end all at once.
You need to as well note the fact that the adjusting of the time by an hour back and forth over the seasons as well is not as healthy for the body looking at the fact that they happen to disrupt the body’s circadian rhythm.
